National Sports
Awards are given every year to recognize & reward excellence in sports.
Apart from a Medal and a Citation, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awardee received
a cash prize of Rs. 7.5 Lakh. Dronacharya, Arjuna and Dhyanchand Awardees
received Statuettes, Citations and Cash prize of Rs. 5 Lakh each. Recipients of
Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar were given Trophies. President of India
conferred the following National Sports & Adventure Awards at a specially
organized function at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi. President of India

1. Rajiv
Gandhi Khel Ratna Award : Highest sports award in India instituted in
1991-92 is given for the most spectacular and outstanding performance in the
field of sports by a sportsperson over a period of four years immediately
preceding the year during which the award is to be given. The awardees are
given a medal, ceremonial dress, certificate and award money of Rs. 7.5 lakh.
2. Dronacharya
Awards : The award instituted in 1985 is given to eminent Coaches who have
successfully trained sportspersons or teams and enabled them to achieve
outstanding results in international competitions.
3. Arjuna
Awards : The award instituted in 1961 is given to sportspersons for
consistently outstanding performance for four years preceding the year of award
and for qualities of leadership, sportsmanship and a sense of discipline.
4. Dhyanchand
Award : The award instituted in 2002 is given for Lifetime Achievement in
Sports and Games who have contributed to sports by their performance and
continue to contribute to the promotion of sports even after their retirement
from active sporting career.
5. Tenzing
Norgay National Adventure Awards : The awards are the highest national
recognition for outstanding achievement in the field of adventure activities.
6. Maulana
Abul Kalam Azad Trophy : The award instituted in 1956-57 is given to top
overall performing university in Inter-University Tournaments.
7. Rashtriya
Khel Protsahan Puruskar : The award is given to recognize contribution made
to sports development by entities other than sportspersons and coaches.
Rajiv Gandhi Khel
Ratna Award
The Rajiv Gandhi Khel
Ratna (RGKR) is India’s highest honour given for achievement in sports. The
words “Khel Ratna” literally mean “sports gem” in Hindi. The award is named
after the late Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India. It carries a medal,
a scroll of honour and a substantial cash component. Up to 2004–05, the cash
component was Rs. 500,000/- . The money has been increased from Rs. 500,000 to
Rs. 750,000. The award was instituted in the year 1991–92 to supply the lack of
a supreme national tribute in the field of sports.

Dronacharya Award
Dronacharya Award is
an award presented by the government of India for excellence in sports
coaching. The award comprises a bronze statuette of Dronacharya, a
scroll of honour and a cash component of Rs.500,000. The award was instituted
in 1985. As the best sportsperson award is named Arjuna Award, it is
appropriate that the coaching award is named after Dronacharya, as he was the
teacher of Arjuna. B.I. Fernandez is the first foreign coach to be awarded
Dronacharya Award.

Arjun Award
The Arjuna Awards
were instituted in 1961 by the government of India to recognize outstanding
achievement in National sports. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 500,000,
a bronze statuette of Arjuna and a scroll.

Dhyanchand Award
Dhyan Chand Award is
India’s highest award for Lifetime Achievement in Sports and Games, given by
the Government of India. The award is named after the legendary Indian hockey
player Dhyan Chand. The award was initiated in 2002. The award carries a cash
prize of INR 500,000, a plaque and a scroll of honour.

National Adventure Awards
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports
had instituted National Adventure Awards in 1993 with a view to giving due
recognition to the achievements made by persons in the field of adventure. The
awards have been renamed as “Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards”.
The objectives of the Award are:
· To recognize the achievements of persons in
the fields of adventure.
· To encourage young people to develop the
spirit of endurance, risk–taking, cooperative teamwork and quick, ready and
effective reflexes in challenging situations.
· To provide incentive to the young people for
getting exposed to the adventure activities.
· The Status of the Award will be same as
Arjuna Awards conferred in the field of sports by the Ministry of Youth Affairs
and Sports.
The Award consists of:
§ A bronze statuette; A
certificate;
§ A blazer with a
silken tie/a saree;
§ A cash award of Rs.5,00,000/- or the same
amount as for Arjuna Award for that particular year.

Azad Trophy
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy was
instituted in 1956-57 as a running trophy by the Ministry of Education, Govt.
of India. This running trophy is awarded by the President of India each year to
a University which has all round best performance in sports at
Inter-University, National and International competitions. Guru Nanak Dev
University started its actual participation in Inter-University and other
tournaments in the year 1974. It goes to the credit of Guru Nanak Dev
University that out of 37 years of its actual participation, it has won India’s
coveted Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy for 21 times, claimed runners-up
position 12 times and attained third position 2 times.
