XIX CWG - 2010 at Delhi
The
logo of Delhi Commonwealth Games 2010 was influenced by Chakra (wheel). The
upward design and logo is the symbol of India’s vibrant growth and power. The
mascot of the games was Shera. 6081 athletes of 71 countries took part in the games.
Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, represented Queen Elizabeth II in the games
and the President of India Smt. Pratibha Devi Singh Patil declared them open on
October 3, 2010. The closing ceremony was held on October 14, 2010 in
Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi.
XIX Commonwealth Games were held on 3rd October, 2010
in Delhi amidst raging controversies but with great fanfare and pomp and show.
About 7,000 sportspersons from 71 countries took part in the games. The games
opened on October 3 with a scintillating ceremony at the Jawaharlal Nehru
Stadium in New Delhi. The opening ceremony dazzled audiences all over the world
with a stunning portrayal of Indian culture.
17 year old Nigerian School girl Augustina
NKem Nwaokolo won the first gold medal of the Delhi Commonwealth Games,
clinching women’s 48-kg weightlifting event.
Olympic shooting champion Abhinav Bindra and
world record holder Gagan Narang won the first gold for India at the 2010
Commonwealth Games, clinching the men’s air rifle pair event; Indian wrestlers
Ravinder Singh, Sanjay and Anil Kumar won three gold medals for the country.
The games ended on October 14, 2010 with a
mind-blowing closing ceremony. India’s performance in the games is beyond
expectations. It is the best performance in Commonwealth Games since 1930.
India won 38 Gold, 27 Silver and 36 Bronze medals in the games. Its tally is
101 and rank No. 2 after Australia.
Pakistan bagged 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 2
Bronze medals in the games. Only 25 countries out of 71 countries bagged medals
in the games.
