National Sports Awards 2012
        The Hon’ble President, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee presented the National Sports Awards 2012 at a glittering function at Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi on August 29, 2012. The awards recognise and reward excellence in sports. London Olympics 2012 Silver medallist Vijay Kumar and Bronze medallist Yogeshwar Dutt were conferred the country’s highest sporting honour, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award for the year 2012. Besides, 25 sportspersons were presented with the Arjuna Award, the second highest sports award in the country. In addition, a host of other sporting honours were also conferred.

Man Booker International Prize
        Albanian poet and novelist, Mr. Ismail Kadare won the Man Booker International Prize. His books include The Concert, Broken April and Elegy for Kosovo. Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe got it for his books Things Fall Apart and Anthills of the Savannah. Alice Munro won the prize for the year 2009. Philip Roth was announced as winner of the Man Booker International Prize 2011 at the Sydney Writers’ Festival on 18 May, 2011. Man Booker Prize 2011 was awarded to Julian Barnes (Britain) for his work ‘The Sense of an Ending’. Hilary Mantel won Man’s Booker Prize in 2012 for her novel ‘Bring up the Bodies’, the sequel to ‘Wolf Hall’ which won the prize in 2009.

Ramon Magsaysay Award
        Vinobha Bhave was the first Indian to get this prestigious award in 1958 for community leadership.
        The former Chief Election Commissioner of India, J.M. Lyngdoh, won the Magasaysay Award for the year 2003 and Admiral Ramdas won this award in 2004. Dr. V. Shanta won this prestigious award in 2005 and Arvind Kejriwal was awarded the same award in 2006. Well-known Indian Journalist on rural affairs

of The Hindu won this award for the year 2007. Prakash Amte, son of well-known social activist Baba Amte and his wife Mandakini  Amte were awarded this prize in 2008 for community leadership. Deep Joshi got this award for the year 2009 for community leadership. Nileema Mishra and Harish Hande were among the six to receive this award for 2011. India’s Kulandei Francis is one of the six winners of Ramon Magsaysay Award for 2012.
Stockholm Water Prize
        King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden presented the 2005 Stockholm Water Prize to Sunita Narain, Director of Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in Stockholm (Sweden) on August 25, 2005. Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak founder of Sulabh Cleanness Movement in India got it for the year 2009 and Rita R. Colvell (USA) for the year 2010. The 2011 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate is Stephen R. Carpenter, Professor of Zoology and Limnology in the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA.
World Food Prize
        An Indian aquaculturist, Mr. Modadugu V. Gupta, research coordinator for the Penang-based World Fish Centre in Malaysia, was named winner of the coveted World Food Prize in 2011, equivalent to the Nobel Prize in Food and Agriculture, for his work in enhancing nutrition for millions of people in South and Southeast Asia, mostly the very poor.
        He is the sixth Indian to receive this prize since it was established in 1986. Earlier Indian recipients include
Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, Dr. Verghese Kurien, Dr. Gurdev Khush, Mr. B.R. Barwale and Dr. Surinder K. Vasal.
        Gebisa Ejeta of Ethiopia got the World Food Prize for 2009 and David Becamann and Jo Luck (both of USA) got this prize for the year 2010.
        John Agyekum Kufuor and Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva  have been chosen to jointly receive the 2011 World Food Prize for their personal commitment and visionary leadership while serving as the presidents of Ghana and Brazil respectively in creating and implementing government policies to alleviate hunger and poverty in their countries. Daniel Hillel is the winner of 2012 World Food Prize. He is an Israeli scientist-master of drip irrigation system.
Jawaharlal Nehru Prize for Peace and International Understanding
        The government instituted the award in 1965 as a tribute to the memory of India’s first Prime Minister and his lifelong dedication to the cause of world peace and international understanding. The award includes a plaque, citation and Rs.25 lakh as prize money. Previous winners included the former U.N. Secretary-General U.       Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was conferred the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding for his unique role in providing stability and progress to his country, in upholding the Arab cause, in promoting peace and understanding in the region. Mr. Mubarak was given the 1995 award in 2011 as attempts to arrange for his bilateral visit did not materialise on three occasions. Curiously, Mubarak was overthrown and had to quit because of mass public uprising against him and his regime in Egypt.
        The Sultan of Oman, Qaboos bin Said al Said, who was named in 2004, is the only other dignitary yet to receive it.

Abel Award
        It was given to the French (Russian origin) wizard of Geometry, Mikhail Leonedovic and Gromov of France in Oslo, Capital of Norway. John Talt of USA was honoured with this award for the year 2010. Started in 2003, the award is called the Nobel Prize for Mathematics. It carries the prize money of Rs. 4.5 crore (6 million Norwegion Krona (NOK)).
        Srinivas S.R. Vardhan was awarded the Abel Prize in Mathematics by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. ABEL Prize for the year 2012 has been given to the great mathematician ENDRE SZENEREDI of Hungary.
       
        Renowned Gandhian Nirmala Deshpande was posthumously honoured by the Govt. of Pakistan with                        ‘Sitara-i-Imtiaz’, one of Pakistan’s highest civilian honours.
       
        The prestigious US Awards for Green Environment and Green Livelihood given to two Indian NGO’s — “Ecosphere Spiti” (Himachal Pradesh) and “Barefoot College” (Rajasthan) in 2009.

        Pritzker Architecture Academy Award for 2009 was given to Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. It is also called the Nobel Prize of Architecture.

        UNO Literacy award for the year 2009 was given to a fortnightly newspaper ‘Khabar Lahariya’ published by the rural woman of UP in Hindi language.

        The renowned musician A.R. Rehman won two prestigious Grammy Awards in the 52nd Grammy Awards Ceremony held in Los Angeles for Best Composition Sound Track and Best Motion picture song (Jai Ho). The award for the song (Jai Ho) is jointly shared by A.R. Rehman, Gulzar and Tanvi Shah.

        Cartoon-maker of Prophet Mohammad, Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard has been awarded M-100 Media Award in Germany. Prophet’s cartoon evoked violent reaction in many parts of the world particularly in Islamic countries including his decapitation (death sentence).
